PSPC All Set for 7th Biennial Convention

The Philippine Society of Pediatric Cardiology (PSPC) is all set to hold its 7th Biennial Convention on May 21 to 22, 2018 at the Crowne Plaza, Manila Galleria, Ortigas in Quezon City.  The theme for this year’s convention is THE HEART OF THE MATTER:  Common and Uncommon Symptoms of Heart Disease in Children”.

The convention is spearheaded by the PSPC Officers headed by Dr. Ma. Corazon Estevanez (President), Dr. Ma. Bernadette Azcueta (Vice-President), Dr. Ninfa Villanueva (Secretary), Dr. Maria Ronella Francisco and Dr. Regente Lapak (Board of Directors) and Dr. Eden Latosa (Immediate Past President).  The Overall Chair is Dr. N. Villanueva with Dr. M. Francisco as Co-Chair.

The Scientific Program Committee headed by Dr. Edison Ty ( with members Dr. Ma. Concepcion Sison, Dr. Cecilienne Acosta, Dr. Regente Lapak and Dr. Ruzenette Hernandez) have prepared an interesting line of topics which tackle heart diseases in children.  As a continuing medical education (CME) provider, the convention has been awarded 21 PPS units, 48 punits, 75 PHA units, 11 PAFP  units (Category 2), 14 PRC units and 9 PCOM units.

An important highlight of the convention is the Dr. Evelyn Singian Memorial Lecture in honor of the lady considered to be a great inspiration of what Pediatric Cardiology is now in the country today.  The lecture will be delivered by Past PSPC President Dr. Ma. Rhodora G. De Leon (“When Big Hearts are a Big Deal: Approach to Cardiomegaly in  Children”).  The moderator of the session will be Dr. Olympia Malanyaon.

On the morning of  Day 1 of the convention,  under the sub-theme “Blame it on the Boogie”  are lectures on conditions which are commonly not cardiac in origin but  due to other  conditions in the pediatric age group (Dr. Anna Marie Edvina Cabaero as moderator).

This includes lectures on chest pain (Dr. C. Acosta), palpitations (Dr. Marivic Esguerra) and syncope (with neuro perspective to be given by Dr. Madeleine Sosa and the cardio perspective to be given by Dr. Berith Berrido).  In the afternoon, under the sub-theme “I’m Not That Innocent”  are topics on signs and symptoms which commonly reflect cardiac diseases such as heart murmurs (Dr. Leah Patricia Arceo-Plucena) and cyanosis (Dr. Andrea Orel Valle).  Dr. Bernard Donald Cadelinia will be the moderator.

On Day 2,  topics on the  sub-theme “The Tell-Tale Heart” (with Dr. Sheldon Paragas as moderator) which include common cardiac cardiac conditions in the pediatric population will be featured in the morning such as myocarditis (Dr. James Angtuaco), acute rheumatic fever (Dr. Regente Lapak), metabolic syndrome (Dr. Siok Soan Chan) and hypertension in obese children (Dr. Ma. Estrellita Alarcon).    Likewise, in the afternoon, under the sub-theme “Please be Careful With My Heart(with Dr. Ma. Rosario P. Bernal as moderator) are topics on the management of common cardiac conditions in  children.  This include topics on management and monitoring of heart failure (Dr. Ma. Dolores Victor), cardiac interventions (Dr. Jose Jonas Del Rosario), and also government subsidy for interventions in children with heart disease (Dr. Juliet Balderas).

Day 1   (Moderator: Dr. Bernadette Azcueta)

Meditrax: “Option for Nitric Oxide in Surgery for Congenital Heart Disease” –to be given by Dr. Karyn Luna

Medtronic: “ Pulse Oximetry in Critical Heart Disease Screening of the Newborn”- to given by Dr. Virginia Mappala and “Cerebral Oximetry Monitoring Based on Near Infrared Spectrometry in Post-operative Cardiac Patients” – to given by Dr. Juliet Balderas.

Day 2 (Moderator: Dr. Glenda Tubianosa)

KPI Healthcare Philippines, Inc: “FETAL ECHO 101”– to be given by Cheng Ching Kit- a Pediatric Cardiologist from Singapore.

The 3rd Interesting Case Report in Pediatric Cardiology Contest for Pediatric residents-in-training will be held after the scientific lectures on Day 1. This will be chaired by Dr. M. Francisco.

After the case report competition is a  Twilight Symposium sponsored by McGraw on “Options for Pulmonary PAH Therapy- Pulmonary Hypertension Crisis Protocol Recommendation” to be delivered by Dr. Ma. Theresa C. Rosqueta.  Dr. Jocelyn Mantilla will be the moderator of this symposium.

To cap the happenings on Day 1 is the FELLOWSHIP NIGHT– “Denims Night” with ripped, tattered or distressed jeans as motiff.  This will be a night of fun, dancing, and camaderie for members and guests of the society.
